It’s far too common to complain about tech companies getting things wrong. Rather than dwell on the negative, I want to talk about when people nail it. I want to talk about great ideas. For instance, the guys at FullContact are getting the Work/Life balance right.
They’ve decided that once per year, they give each employee $7500 to go on vacation. No choice. Take the money, get out of the office. And this isn’t the typical “working” vacation where your phone is constantly going Fukushima. One of the provisions is that you have to completely disconnect. Another is you can’t do any work.
It’s brilliant.
It’s so brilliant I stopped reading halfway through to see what FullContact did. It’s so damned amazing that the first thing I did when I walked in the office this morning was show the article to half a dozen geeks. The free marketing alone is worth it – every last person said something along the lines of “I want to work for those guys or someone like them”.
And don’t even get me started about how much I love the “You love working for companies that don’t support IE7” blurb in one of their job postings.
Well done to FullContact. You are truly getting tech right.
